Dive Brief:
- Dell EMC's president of Infrastructure Solutions Group David Goulden is leaving his role one year after the Dell/EMC acquisition, according to a Dell Technologies announcement. Jeff Clarke, Dell Inc. vice chairman, will assume the leadership positions of Dell EMC's Client Solutions Group and Infrastructure Solutions Group.
- Clarke will also head Dell's international manufacturing, procurement and supply chain operations. Dell EMC recently beat out HPE for the top spot in global sever shipments. It now accounts for 17.5% of the server market, narrowly beating out HPE's 17.1% share.
- Goulden will officially leave as president at the end of the fiscal year in January 2018. Goulden has worked for EMC since 2002 in varying C-suite roles including COO and CFO, Fortune reports.
Dive Insight:
Dell merged with EMC in a $62 billion deal last year, cementing its reputation as one of the largest privately held technology companies. The technology giant, now Dell Technologies, was expected to dominate its overarching markets, including client products like PCs and enterprise infrastructure hardware.
Dell Technologies' needs are evolving, and that is reflective in its change of leadership. The change may be indicative of a more streamlined approach to Dell EMC's product management. "The transition of EMC into Dell EMC is complete," said Goulden, "the time is right for a personal transition to bring the product groups together under Jeff's most capable leadership."
Dell is aligning the product groups, bringing infrastructure and client solutions together under one IT leader. As the provider works to expand in the market, particularly as more customers are turning to cloud providers rather than building data centers themselves, the streamlined leadership will help Dell execute under a single strategy.
