[WILMINGTON, DE] — Oct. 7, 2026 — Frontier-agnostic deployment firm zeb today released new research examining the state of enterprise AI adoption. This data reveals a sharp contrast between rapid AI adoption expectations and the operational realities of implementation.
While 70% of respondents report that AI is integrated across multiple functions and 81% expect AI initiatives to demonstrate ROI within 3 to 12 months, significant barriers to value remain. According to zeb’s latest study, 72% of organizations admit their most recent AI or automation initiative required workarounds or significant manual intervention behind the scenes. Furthermore, integration complexity with existing systems (40%) was identified as the single largest barrier to frontier AI, outranking trust in vendors or partners (24%).
The findings underscore a growing trend of fatigue among IT decision-makers and executives regarding traditional delivery models. When considering their most recent outside technology engagement, 32% of respondents reported that quality was sacrificed first, followed by cost (26%) and speed (15%). The data also revealed widespread frustration with standard vendor responses: "We're almost there" was cited as the most overused vendor phrase (36%), followed by "That's outside the original scope" (27%) and "The AI model needs more training" (21%).
"It’s clear that enterprise buyers are done subsidizing vendor learning curves,” said Mal Vivek, founder and CEO of zeb. “Enterprise AI is too important to be bound by kickbacks or vendor lock-in, and buyers shouldn't carry the financial risk of under-delivering systems. That’s why we built zeb around total frontier agnosticism and a 100% contractual outcome guarantee: If we don't ship the outcome we promised, the client shouldn't have to pay for the attempt.”
In response to these execution challenges, demand for partner accountability and buyer alignment is reaching a tipping point. Anticipating this frustration in AI adoption, zeb recently underwent a year-long restructuring to change how the company intakes, builds and delivers enterprise transformation work. The company now operates as a flat, builder-led organization. Roles across sales, operations and delivery are unified by technical fluency. Notably, among data respondents, the majority (44%) selected outcome-based pricing with a contractual guarantee as their preferred AI delivery model.
Vendor neutrality was also found to be paramount, with an overwhelming 87% of respondents stating that it is important or critical for an AI services partner to remain strictly vendor-neutral, with no commercial stake in which model or platform the client chooses.
“Vendor neutrality is an engineering requirement,” said Sid Vivek, chief technology officer of zeb. “ When an integration partner is incentivized to push a specific cloud or model, you end up with square-peg architecture forced into round-hole enterprise systems. Integration is hard enough without your systems integrator complicating it. Staying agnostic lets our engineering team at zeb pick whatever combination of tech is actually best for the problem."
The survey launch coincides with deepened collaboration with Amazon Web Services and OpenAI, two of zeb's foundational technology partners. Enterprise programs are already underway across financial services, healthcare and industrial sectors in collaboration with these partners.
