The general manager of Cisco’s IoT & Applications Group says his company is best positioned to help companies preparing to launch millions of Internet of Things devices.
Rowan Trollope said only Cisco has the ability to adapt networks that were not designed for IoT to ones that are, while also enhancing IoT security, speaking at the Cisco Partner Summit, according to a CSO report.
Gartner predicts 21 billion IoT devices will be used globally by 2020.
"The internet as we know it today, and the network that you operate, will not work for the Internet of Things," Trollope said in a keynote presentation Tuesday. "We can solve that problem because we own the network."
Trollope said Cisco is also currently working on a new program that would improve IoT security and hopefully prevent further botnet attacks that take over insecure IoT devices to do their dirty work.
Security concerns around IoT devices are growing, and companies like Cisco are looking to capitalize on those fears with more secure IoT networks and offerings. The company has worked to build its IoT capabilities as its traditional network business has slowed.
