Dive Brief:
-
On Sunday, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman invited the public to help test the speed of their Internet and submit the results.
-
The request is part of a probe into whether large providers are short-changing customers with slower-than-advertised speeds.
-
The office launched the investigation into Verizon Communications, Cablevision Systems Corp and Time Warner Cable in October.
Dive Insight:
Schneiderman said his office created a new online broadband test on a site called Internethealthtest.org that will capture the speed at which customers actually access Internet content. Once the test is completed, Schneiderman asked customers to submit a screenshot of the results.
“New Yorkers should get the Internet speeds they pay for,” Schneiderman said. “Too many of us may be paying for one thing, and getting another.”
Schneiderman's office sent the three companies letters asking for copies of tests they have done on Internet speeds and disclosures they have made to their customers, among other things. The three companies say they are confident in their Internet speeds.
