Dive Brief:
-
In a bid to capitalize on Windows 10, Korean manufacturer LG announced the release of a laptop Monday.
-
The LG Gram (weighs less than a kilogram) is the company's first laptop made specifically for the U.S. market.
- The Gram will compete with models like the MacBook Air.
Dive Insight:
The Gram weighs just 2.16 pounds and is available in three models ranging in price from $899 to $1,399.
The introduction of the new laptop is notable as the slowdown in the U.S. PC market has been well documented. In August, Gartner said PC shipments fell 9.5% from the second quarter of 2014 to the second quarter of 2015 – the largest PC shipment decline since the third quarter of 2013. HP just announced it was laying off approximately 30,000 people, while PC maker Lenovo said it lost nearly $300 million last quarter and was cutting about 3,200 non-manufacturing jobs.
In a press release, David VanderWaal, vice president of marketing at LG Electronics USA, said LG is well aware of the challenges ahead.
"We recognize this is an extremely competitive category, and are confident consumers will respond well to this product that combines powerful performance with lightweight design," said VanderWaal.
