Dive Brief:
-
A study from Cisco surveying data center traffic predicts 83% of all data center traffic will be cloud-based within the next three years.
-
Currently, about 65% of data center traffic is based in the cloud, according to the study.
-
The study also predicted that the majority (56%) of workloads will go to public cloud services and about 44% to private clouds.
Dive Insight:
"Although many mission-critical workloads might continue to be retained in the traditional data centers or private cloud, the public cloud adoption is increasing along with the gain in trust in public cloud," the study said.
The study also predicts Software as a Service (SaaS) will continue to be the dominant type of cloud service. In three years, 59% of cloud implementations will be SaaS, the study found, compared to 28% IaaS and 11% PaaS.
An April report from International Data Corporation predicted public cloud growth of approximately 14% to $24.4 billion in 2016, while a May report from Synergy Research found that the overall cloud market grew by an astonishing 50% in the first quarter of 2016,
The Cisco survey also made some estimates around data overall, predicting more than 500 zettabytes (ZBs) of data will be generated by 2019. About a third of that will be generated by IoT devices alone, Cisco found.
