- Atlanta has some of the most connected devices per network in the U.S., even more than traditional tech hubs like Seattle and the Bay Area, according to a new report from eero, a home Wi-Fi system provider, which aggregated and anonymized data from its networks in 10 major cities.
- Atlanta averaged more than nine connected devices per household. Meanwhile, the average number of internet-connected devices in an eero household is 8.35. Sonos speakers were among the most popular devices connected to eero networks.
- Atlanta was followed by Seattle and Denver as the cities with the largest number of devices on a network. Dallas rounded out the top 10 with an average 7.91 connected devices.
Connected homes are quickly becoming more common. Gartner recently projected that 8.4 billion connected products will be in use worldwide in 2017, up 31% year over year.
But while consumers will purchase more devices this year, businesses will spend more. Businesses alone will drive $964 billion in IoT hardware sales in 2017, according to Gartner.
As use of IoT devices in homes and businesses grows, security remains a concern. Until IoT device makers are held to higher security standards, devices with poor security can creep into homes and businesses and make them vulnerable to data breaches or harness them to launch DDoS attacks.
